DEAR & Love Your School Library Day

October Reading Events

October is Library Month

If you didn’t know, there is a provincial proclamation (as of 2022) stating that October is Library Month and that October 24th is School Library Day. Here is a link to the official pdf.

October is also Canadian Library Month, sponsored by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA). All month long, libraries and library partners across Canada are raising awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. Check out their website to find out more about each year’s theme.

Canadian School Library Day is usually the fourth Monday in October. Canadian School Libraries (CSL) has great information about how you can advocate for your libraries on that day on their website.

October is also International School Library Month (ISLM). The International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) celebrates each ISLM with a theme. For a global perspective about sharing a love for reading and school libraries, check out their website.

BCTLA DEAR: Drop Everything and Read

The BCTLA typically celebrates DEAR the Monday after the BCTLA PSA Conference in October (the same as Canadian School Library Day). However, we encourage our membership to choose the best date that works for you and your school. You might even want to celebrate DEAR more than once a year. Since October 24th is officially BC School Library Day, some of our Teacher-Librarian colleagues find this to be a great way to get their administration to support DEAR in their schools.

The Drop Everything and Read Challenge will be held on Monday October 23, 2023!

BCTLA is excited to offer a poster to promote the event in English and French.  Posters may be downloaded and printed in any way by anyone in any jurisdiction!  However, if you wish to make alterations to the content included on any of the posters, please contact BCTLA regarding the necessary copyright permissions.

Share-Celebrate-Advocate. Everyone can participate:

  • Drop Everything and Read! Participate in the BC DEAR challenge.
  • Visit your school library soon!
  • Post your DEAR activities on social media using the hashtags #BCTLA #DEAR #BCDEAR and @bctlaofficial on Instagram.

November Reading Events

I Read Canadian Day

Nicola Campbell, Robert Munsch, Roch Carrier, David Bouchard, Gordon Korman, Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenneth Oppel, Dennis Lee …

Canada is home to phenomenal writers of world class stories, and November TBD is the day to celebrate them.

I Read Canadian Day will take place on November 8, 2023. This is a great time to show our pride in our home grown talent.

Consider celebrating by:

  • displaying Canadian books around your school
  • hosting a Drop Everything and Read time dedicated to Canadian authors
  • have students bring their favorite Canadian stuffed animal to school and read a Canadian story to it
  • read a wacky Canadian poem to your school
  • host an author’s visit

The ideas are endless!
